Starting Mage

Getting started in mage is expensive if you have to buy all your runes and rune crafting is time consuming and slow, couple that with mining of essence and it can get BORING. Runes are a relatively high cost disposable item considering the rewards gained until you reach at least a midrange rune crafting level. You could get runes as drops from melee combat but the range of runes and the quantity is limited and you would find that melee is far more productive.

Wow.. totally agree making your own runes is boring! Is it worth just killing hill hiants for example, hoping they drop runes? I guess this would get your combat up as well?

    Hi Julia
You make a valid point in that getting runes from Hill Giant drops also increases combat level, but dont forget to bury the bones to get prayer xp. Getting runes from this and other combatants such as dark wizards to engage in mage ultimately means that melee will always exceed mage, this may not be what you want so that runecrafting will become necessary.
