Dang Comp!

How many times have you been playing the game and seen another player complain of computer lag?
Many times he/she is the only one with lag and what he needs is a friend with the know how to fix it!
But what if you can’t solve a comp problem and you are at your wits end with out a clue what to do
next, where do you go?

I think that I am quite good at solving most problems when they occur and I have access to the best
when I get stuck on a problem, and thats more often than I care to admit!

Unfortunately a number of my friends rely upon me to fix their problems wether it is hardware or
software. On a number of occassions it involves programs that I am not familiar with, and I can spend a
lot of time working through a number of possibilities and I wish that I had a friend that I could call on.
And sometimes I am just not available to help so they have to wait, they really should be able to get
help when they need it.

A case for a dirty bucket

The other day I made a chocolate cake and I am glad I didn’t have to eat it!
I needed a bucket of milk, so I took a bucket that previously had supercompost in it and used that when
I milked the cow. Now how hygenic is that?
Have you noticed the toilets in runescape? Me neither! or bathrooms? same result. So what does the
game teach young players about hygene? Basically nothing, but then it is their parents job to do that isn’t
it? We see many examples today of parents taking little responsibility in raising their offspring often
relying on others such as the education system.
What runescape does teach is responsibility for ones own actions instead of blaming others for our
mistakes or shortcomings. This attitude of not taking resonsibility is very common these days and it is
hoped that young people playing this great game will accept their resonsibility more readily in real life.
This will make them more worthy citizens and surely much more important than washing out a bucket
in a game!

Bots on the runescape

Macros or bots are a blot on the Runescape landscape. They are a means of cheating and spoil the game
for many players, but to what extent?
Take fishing for example, If you go fishing and are on your own, how is the fishing? It is probably
slower than when there a number of players fishing. In fact the more there are fishing then the quicker
the fish respawn and the prescence of bots does not depreciate your catch. The crunch comes when you
are selling as the bot catches flood the market and the street price is driven downwards. Watch a bot
and you will see that they do not generally cook their catch but deposit straight into the bank, so who
does the cooking?
Now look at woodcutting, again lots of bots gathered around willows and yews but not so much around
maples, so what do they do with the logs? bank them of course! So, who uses the logs, it can only be
fletchers and we see in many shops unstrung bows by the thousand literally. Why unstrung? Well that
stage is quick and easy and they get 50% of the xp for a fully strung bow, and you never see a bot
collecting flax or making bow strings! Maybe the cheats haven’t got a program for that yet.
Your woodcutting however IS compromised by bots and I have cut yews against a bot and got no logs at
all on a number of occassions only to see them trot off to the bank!
I am sure that most people recognize a bot but you can never be 100% sure. They might be a genuine
player that does not do combat and hence the low combat level or a newbie.
Some bots are hard to recognize as they could be of any level wearing any style of clothing or armour.
How many times have you seen accounts being offered for sale? Absolutely against Jagex rules but it
happens anyway, and how many of these genuine accounts are converted into bots?

Potions, good or bad?

One or two things about Runescape bother me and the first is the use of performance enhancing drugs (potions). Take the strenght potion and up goes str lvl by three points and that means you can hit harder in mellee combat, but there is no physical price to pay, no downside to taking the drug! There are potions for agility, fishing, attack etc. and none have downside!

If you drink wine or beer you gain some healing value but you lose some attack ability. In fact your character can get so drunk it cannot operate, try it!

So what message is this sending to the young and impressionable people playing the game? Is it alright to take drugs and the only cost is money and that drinking beer and wine is injurious to health but only for a little while!

Does the game teach that if you can afford them, using the perfomance enhancing drugs is a good thing and can give you an advantage over other players?  Would the game lose any of its appeal if it did not have these potions, I don’t it would as all it would do is bring the game back to a level playing field based on players acheivements and that would be a good thing.

Construction

One of the things about construction that took me a long time to realise is that to increase your skill level you have to build, demolish and rebuild many times over, trouble is the expenses incurred can become overwhelming and the runescape constuction skill is definitely not for the impecunious.

How different from real life where there is help at hand!

My present house is small (only four rooms plus workshop) and I am at the point of moving to a new location or just upgrading the house from timber to stone and the finances have to be considered very closely before I make a decision, meanwhile I will keep making willow bows and mining to ensure I can afford my plans, I would rather go fishing though where there is a lot of good friendly chat.

Home ownership is an investment in your family’s future, providing a safe haven to go to when the days work is done, but, make sure that you get the right advice about the financial side and your home will be a blessing to you.

Out of bank space?

Bank space is a problem for most players and a lot of stuff is collected when doing quests that has no further use once the quest is finished. I am by nature a hoarder and reticent about getting rid of anything that may be useful sometime. So how much useless stuff do you have? How many items that are collected just to use during a quest and not needed again? Look at the books and then keys for a start.  Use tip it as a reference and get rid of the junk, you will find most of it is not tradeable so just drop it! I did this and recovered two whole lines of bank space!

Shopping

Imagine for a moment. You go into a shop and up pops an item that you need desperately and you have cash in the bank but not with you, and in the time it takes to get the cash the item would be sold. If only you could have a Merchant Account

Of course you don’t carry large amounts of gp with you because of the High Risk involved if you have to be involved in combat and lose it all.

Perhaps one day Runescape will add an extension to its already fantastic program to incorporate members having a game credit card at maybe a fee charged for every usage. The online credit card processing would be very advantageous to players not willing to take the High Risk of carrying large amounts of cash and still allow them to buy when the opportunity arises.

I Died I Did!

I got killed a couple of days ago! Shame on me. Ah no, I am not asking for help or even sympathy and it bugs me when I see others saying “I just died, help me, I need xxxxxxxxx” I always think ‘well that was stupid’. Then I died, and that WAS stupid! There is an old military adage which holds true in every aspect of life and it is simply ‘know your enemy’. What did I do, I saw a room with level 96 creatures and thought I could take them on, oh yes I can defeat levels way above that, but I should have checked them out with Tipit before going in that room. Therefore I was not prepared properly and lost, what a noob!

Know your enemy. I didn’t and lost about 120k gp but at least I got a free tele to Lumby! I went fishing until I stopped calling myself Noob, Nooby, Nooblette!

Starting Mage

Getting started in mage is expensive if you have to buy all your runes and rune crafting is time consuming and slow, couple that with mining of essence and it can get BORING. Runes are a relatively high cost disposable item considering the rewards gained until you reach at least a midrange rune crafting level. You could get runes as drops from melee combat but the range of runes and the quantity is limited and you would find that melee is far more productive.
